Identification of asbestos fibers in ambient air

Regulation respecting occupational health and safety ( RSST)

Article 69.14, of the provision on the safe management of asbestos, stipulates that the employer must take the necessary measures to control the emission of asbestos dust before starting work on materials or products. , including on flockings and heat insulators, containing asbestos. In this regard, the employer has the same obligations as those provided for in the Safety Code for the construction industry (chapter S-2.1, r. 4).

In addition, the concentration of asbestos fibers in the air is strictly regulated. Indeed, the sanitary standard does not allow the asbestos concentration to exceed 0.1 fiber / cm3. In reducing exposure to breathable asbestos fibers, a much stricter standard of 0.01 fibers / cm3 is applied. This is a target level that must be reached by our asbestos specialists after asbestos removal.

To rule out any suspicion of asbestos in a home, and to ensure a healthy environment, we also perform ambient air tests. This kind of testing helps keep buildings healthy and occupants in good health.

You live for several years in your apartment or house. Whenever you renovate or restore your home, you risk accidentally or unknowingly disturbing an old asbestos space. Once handled, asbestos bursts into finer-sized fibers (diameter less than one micron). As a result, these dissipate and remain suspended in the air for days and weeks. Faced with such a situation, our asbestos specialists are there to help you test and assess the quality of the indoor air you breathe.

What can we do

According to the IRSST 243-1 fiber count method, we analyze the asbestos fibers suspended in the air, by sucking a volume of air measured through a 25mm ECM membrane filter. . We are recognized by the IRSST for this type of analysis

The sampling strategy depends on the duration and degree of risk of exposure to asbestos fibers:

During the works

During the works

During the execution of the work, we take daily in:

  • The clean cloakroom, where workers leave their city clothes, an air sample to check, if applicable, for the presence of asbestos fibers from the high-risk work area to the clean cloakroom.

  • The work sector (high-risk confined area), an air sample from the worker's breathing zone at least once per work shift (CSTC. Art. 3.23.16.-4), in order to verify the effectiveness of its respiratory protection device and therefore prevent the concentration of asbestos fibers from exceeding the exposure limit value.

At the end of the work

At the end of the decontamination work and before the decompartmentalization of the work area, a final asbestos test is carried out. The latter makes it possible to validate that the work was carried out in accordance with regulatory requirements.

When the work is finished

Once the decontamination work has been completed, and before the work area is decompartmentalized, a final asbestos test is carried out. This validates that the work has been carried out in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Ambient air sampling

Ambient air sampling

In order to rule out suspicion of the existence of asbestos in a residence and to consider a healthy place, we also perform ambient air tests. This type of test helps to keep buildings in a good state of cleanliness and occupants in good health.
